The faith of Abraham and Rahab

Faith
and works.

When James talks about faith, he is referring to our faith as it is practiced in our daily lives after salvation.

So next, let’s prove this out by examining each of the references to faith in the letter of James.

JAM 1:2-4

This faith is trusting the Lord to bring us through the trials of this life.

This is also the purpose of faith in the book of Hebrews chapter 11.

The Old Testament heroes trusted the Lord to deliver them when they found themselves facing death.

And by this faith they DID deeds!

And the faith in JAM 1:2-4 is a faith that is TESTED when we encounter trials.

This is a faith that is involved in producing something.

Here, faith is working toward a perfect result.

Faith in the midst of trials is a faith for our daily life. It is a practical, living faith.

JAM 1:5-8

This is our prayer life - after salvation.

Wisdom is the ability to make right choices and take the right actions in our daily lives.

James addresses faith in the realm of practical daily living.
 
NOT for redemption or eternal life.

JAM 2:1-7

In verse 5, James is talking about the poor of this world.

Rich faith is a deep faith to tackle the trials of this life.

JAM 5:14-15

The elders of the church are offering a prayer in faith. 
This is in fact faith working with works.

For now, let’s simply observe the context when faith or believing is mentioned in JAM 2:14-26.

JAM 2:14-17

In verse 14-17, faith is mentioned in the context of a brother or a sister in need.

James asks, “what use is that?”
 
And the answer is: no use at all!

The context for faith and works here has to do with practical daily living.

What believers say, what they do, and the needs of others.

JAM 2:18-26

Two people provide the context for faith in JAM 2:18-26. They are Abraham, and Rahab the harlot.

Abraham offering up his son Isaac on the altar.

Rahab receiving the messengers and sending them out by another way.
