Another life-changing Greek verb.

Romans 6:6 the old man was CRUCIFIED with Christ.

COL 3:9-10  we HAVE put OFF the old man.

EPH 4:21-22  we have been taught to put AWAY the old man.

Colossians and Romans state the facts.

Ephesians appeals to our faith, applying to ourselves what we have learned concerning the facts.

I put away the old man - the corruption, the evil practices - by considering the fact that God has already done it!

The Old Man has a natural mind, feelings, tastes and desires - all apart from God.

Sin
completely dominated the old man
through the body.

The old man represents all we naturally were - desires, lusts, ambitions, hopes, judgments, behaviors -

The old man represents all that we all naturally were, looked at as one whole, looked at Federally.

We know five things about the old man:

1. He was crucified with Christ.

2. He has evil practices.

3. We have put him off.

4. He is being corrupted by the lusts of deceit.

5. We are to lay him aside - put him away.

“freed” is the perfect passive indicative of the Greek verb

δικαιόω

dikaioo

dikaioo = to render (i.e. show or regard as) just or innocent:

to declare to be righteous, to pronounce righteous

to cause to be released from the control of some state or situation involving moral issues - 'to release, to set free.'

to be freed from its dominion

This is being in the clear and being declared righteous by God when it comes to our sins.

All of these passages talk about justification by faith, which is the big message of Romans 3-5.

This is being in the clear and being declared righteous by God when it comes to our sins.

Here in verse 7 he who has died is justified from sin, not sins.

Sin, the rebellion against God.

Sin which still dwells in my flesh, in the members of my body.

You and I have been declared righteous and free, released from, the dominion of sin.

We have been exonerated, released from, not only our personal sins, but also sin in the flesh.

Distinguish between being justified from sins - from the guilt of sins - by the blood of Christ, through faith…

…and being justified from sin - the thing itself-, by our death with Christ on the cross.

It is the consciousness of sinfulness that keeps believers back from reigning in life.

What comes roaring through Paul’s letters is this unconquerable confidence and boldness and abundant life.
