Practical Christianity:

Death ought to
humble us

The wisdom from above leads to life.

The earthly “wisdom” leads to death.

As members of the body of Christ, we have been given the wisdom from God because we are in Christ.

1CO 1:30-31

We have enemies trying to destroy us. One of them actually dwells in our bodies.

JAM 4:1-10

JAM 4:5 “Do you think that Scripture says in vain that the spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?” (KJV)

God wants us to face the truth about ourselves.

If we read James 4 honestly, we face the fact that we have lusts in our bodies that wage a war of destruction.

We also come face to face with the fact that we have a tendency to flirt with the world.

“The world” means the organization and the mind and the outlook of mankind as it ignores and rejects God -

- and lives
a self-centered life independent of Him.

Paul had a fellow worker for the gospel named Demas who got caught up in this.

2TI 4:9-10

1JO 2:15-17

After all, what do people do when they encounter death?

They MOURN!

Coming face to face with the fact that nothing good dwells in us, that is, our flesh, is a kind of death.

ROM 7:4-11

Our laughter turns into mourning when we realize that the wages of sin is death.

MAT 5:4
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

LUK 6:21

GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.

Our pride gets knocked down when we come face to face with our death.

And mourning can be a season that prepares us for the harvest of a more humble heart.

Mourning leads to humility and humility leads to a
new appreciation of the grace of God.

So we let the Lord’s power deal with our enemies.

The Spirit wars against the flesh. Jesus has overcome the world.

And the armor of God sends the principalities and powers packing.

JAM 4:9-10

James sees the life of God’s people through the lens of the Old Testament.

The Old Testament speaks to the sons of Israel, God’s earthly people.

We are God’s heavenly people. Paul’s epistles teach us who we are, and how we are to live.
