Introduction to Romans 6.

Tonight we begin our study of Romans 6.

The language of Romans so far has been the language of the courtroom.

ROM 1:18-3:20 presented the formal indictment of every person, Jew and Gentile.

God displayed Christ as a propitiation through faith in His blood.

Whoever believes in Christ is justified or declared righteous by God.

Chapter 4 shows how this means of justification by faith is consistent with the Old Testament.

ROM 3:21-5:21 present the fact that Christ died for us.

He died for us and He was raised from the dead for us.

He died because of our sins and lawless deeds and transgressions. These are in the plural in Rom 3, 4, and 5.

Christ’s death also did away with the condemnation we were under because of Adam’s transgression.

Christ died for us.

Our justification in chapter 5 is related NOT to our personal sins, as in chapters 3 and 4, …

…but to our guilt by and in Adam, from which we are cleared by Christ’ s death.

Christ’s death on the cross cleared us not only of our own sins, but also of our condemnation in Adam.

Our old man, all we were from Adam.

Our sinful state by nature.

Our walk.
Our placement into and identification with Christ (baptism).
Our human bodies.

ROM 1:18 - 5:21 has statements of fact.
 
No commands at all - just facts.

And chapter 5 brings us this joyful news that our salvation is eternally secure.

Romans 6 asks and answers two questions.

ROM 6:1
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?

ROM 6:15
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?

Both are asking if we are to continue to sin.

But the reasons given are different in the two questions.

One is so that grace might increase or abound.

The other is because we are not under law but under grace.

The two questions are answered first with other questions!

COL 3:3
For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

The first question is dealt with by presenting the FACT of our death with Christ to sin.

The second question is met with the FACT that you have exchanged masters.

The rest of the verses work out the implications of these two great facts.

Rom 6: We died with Christ to sin.
