Godliness with contentment is great gain

1Ti 6:1-6

Slaves, false teachers, and the congregation generally.

The behavior of the congregation can help or hinder the progress of the gospel message.

Contentment in any circumstances.

Phi 4:12

1Ti 6:1

At that time, there were millions of slaves in the Roman Empire.

Slaves were the exclusive property of their masters, and they had no control over their lives.

1Pe 2:18-19

Regardless of circumstance,
the slave was to give honor to his master.

1Pe 2:12-15

But nowhere was the church instructed to combat the institution of slavery.

Rather, in Christ, slaves and masters were to treat one another as brothers.

Gal 3:26-28

Paul will show how their false teaching breeds discontent.

1Ti 6:3-5

Forget teaching the saints about their obligations to one another.

They won’t teach on suffering. That might expose their fraud.

1Pe 2:20-21

The last thing they want to talk about is following Christ’s example.

1Jo 3:16-17

They think that their wealth is a sign of God’s favor.

They turn their ministry into a business.

1Ti 6:5-6

They are incapable of being content with what they have.

2Co 8:9

Material gain is not godliness. Far from it.

Mar 8:36

What greater gain can a man receive than to be brought from death to life?

Colossians 3:22-24

If a slave can be content with his circumstances, how much more ought we to be content with ours?

Isaiah 53:7

The Lord is your shepherd. He will never deny you any good thing.
