A spectacle to the world

1Co 4:6-13

Let no one boast in men.

Now he turns from general principles and figurative language, to speak directly to the church at Corinth.

The things they think about themselves and their leaders are in every respect the exact OPPOSITE of the truth.

DELUSIONAL

What they mean by “wise” is the opposite of what God considers true wisdom to be.

Their view of nobility has nothing in common with the real thing.

Rom 12:3

It’s literally all in their head.

a point-by-point comparison between them and the apostles.

1Co 4:6-7

Don’t be arrogant. And stop boasting about yourselves.

He changed the names to protect the guilty!

The message was about THEM all along.

They were pumping themselves up along with their favorite leaders, and putting down the rest of the congregation.

They had a totally inflated understanding of the true nature of man.

1Co 1:19
1Co 1:31

1Co 2:9
1Co 2:16

1Co 3:19-20

1Co 4:7

He asks them:
“Who”,
“What”,
“Why?”

No one.
Nothing.
No good reason.

He presents a series of contrasts between that church and the apostles.

He will show that what is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God- and vice versa. (Luke 16:15)

1Co 4:8-13

You are much more advanced in wisdom and knowledge and power than we lowly apostles are!

We are a spectacle to the world.

How did Christ redeem you?
Through His blood!!!

You say you are full of life and have everything you need.

1Co 4:11

You are just like what the Laodicean church will be like in the future.

Rev 3:17

You are all wrapped up in appearances – but God looks at the heart.

2Co 4:7-12

Your outer man looks great, but your inner man is pretty ugly.

1Co 4:10

They were really infants in Christ! Their words had zero power!

God was using the foolishness of the apostles to shame the Corinthians who thought they were so wise.

1Co 1:27-29

He wraps up his scathing dress-down by showing how the apostles dealt with persecution from the world that the church so admired.

1Co 4:12-13

THIS is the mind of Christ!!!
“Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
