There are TWO KINDS of unbelievers in view here in 1Corinthians 14:21-25. Verses 21-22 address unbelievers who remain outside the church. Verses 23-25 address unbelievers who enter into the church. The unbelievers in verses 21-22 are a completely different group from the unbelievers in verses 23-25. 1Co 14:23-25 What if everyone spoke in tongues all at once? The unbelievers would think that we had lost our minds! Rock concerts and motivational speakers and dramatic renditions WON’T SAVE anybody OR BUILD anybody up. What if they held a worship service where everybody spoke the word of God? The Spirit would be directing the prophets to address this man’s situation. The gospel of Jesus Christ. 1Co 1:18 1Co 14:24-25 When the gospel is preached, it is the power of God for – for what? SALVATION. Rom 1:16 The Holy Spirit works to convict or convince the unbelievers that they need a Savior. Joh 16:8-11 Romans 1:18 – 3:24 But ultimately our role is to preach the good news of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. (Rom 10:17) 1Co 15:1-4 1Co 14:24-25 This does not mean that the saints knew the secret sins of the unbeliever, and confronted him with them. Here “by all” means by the cumulative effect of all of the prophesying. It means to realize that you are a sinner, accountable to God. The secrets of his heart are NOT disclosed to the congregation. They’re not disclosed to the prophet either. He becomes aware of the sinfulness of his own heart. The Spirit, however, does look into his heart. Heb 4:12-13 It’s the preaching of God’s word that leads the unbeliever to conclude that God is certainly present in the assembled church.
