The Doctrine of Spiritual Gifts

Point 1: Setting the scene for Paul’s teaching on the Spiritual Gifts.

The most extensive treatment of the subject of spiritual gifts is found in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, chapters 12 through 14.

The Angelic conflict plays out in the conflict between the principles of the world system and the principles of the cross.

Occupation - I will make you fishers of men
Family ties - let the dead bury the dead, forgo saying goodbye to those at home
Wealth - sell all you own and give to the poor

Position or rank - off the tax booth
Comfort - the son of man has nowhere to lay His head
Status in the community - pick up your cross

It is not that the things were bad in and of themselves. The problem was that these people were living for these things rather than living for the plan of God.

Living in view of the cross of Jesus Christ means renouncing any inordinate desire for, any total reliance on, those things that the up-and-comers in Corinth - and in America today! - held onto for dear life!!!

Our Lord in His love and discernment pinpointed the one thing that was causing the most trouble for each person - the biggest obstacle to following Him.

His invitation gave them the opportunity to be set free from their bondage to an idol they had worshipped instead of worshipping Him. Some said yes to Him, and others said no.

The grace of God
is at work
in the ORs and ANDs
of Mark 10:29 and 30.

What in the world is “the world”?

This phrase “the world” is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the Bible.

1. It is not the monastic or ascetic interpretation.

2. The second false idea of what “the world” means has to do with a strictly moral interpretation.

3. A third false idea of not loving the world means to stop being interested in politics or social life.

4. “the world” does not refer to the physical world in the sense of the mountains and the valleys and the rivers.

5. It does not mean the life of the world in general, ie, marriage, family, business, professional life and so on.

What in the world is “the world”?

“The world” means the organization and the mind and the outlook of mankind as it ignores God and does not recognize Him and lives a life independent of Him, a life that is based on this world and this life only.

“The world” means the outlook that has rebelled against God and turned its back on Him.

God provided perfectly for man’s body, soul, and spirit.

The Garden of Eden was awesome, and the Lord said that Adam and the woman could eat freely! Only don’t abuse the privilege by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

satan stirred up attraction for the false to lure man away from the true provision from God. But it only ended in death and it never truly satisfies.

Know as a matter of first importance that Christ through His cross has overcome it, John 16:33.

You share in that victory by virtue of being a believer and therefore being in union with Him.

At the moment of belief in Christ as your savior,
you are placed in an unbreakable union with Him.
