Fight the good fight

1Ti 1:18-20

“this command” refers directly to verse 18, and indirectly to verses 3-5.

1Ti 1:3-5

“fight the good fight” is a succinct summary of verses 3 -5.

Paul was fond of using military metaphors in his letters.

2Ti 2:3-5

We get insight into the nature of these prophecies from a pivotal event for Paul’s ministry.

Act 13:1-4

This is all the work of the Holy Spirit.

It included
their commission, their calling, and
their ministry.

1Ti 1:18

Words from the Holy Spirit revealing Timothy’s commission and gifts.

It’s the good fight because this battle is the Lord’s.

Paul and Timothy were Army officers.

1Ti 1:19

Hymenaeus and Alexander were Naval officers.

Faith here refers to sound doctrine, especially the glorious gospel.

A good conscience directs the will using the standards of the word of God.

Once they rejected a good conscience, their faith was destroyed.

1Ti 1:20

“Blaspheme” means speaking against the Lord, His word, or His messengers.

1Co 5:4-5

In both cases the goal of the handing over was restorative.

The Greek word for “taught” means to teach using discipline.

In 1Cor 5, it meant banishing the offender by removing him from the church.

1Co 5:13

The church is the sphere of God’s protection.

The person would face the full fury of satan’s realm.
No mercy, no grace.

Like Paul and Timothy, we have our own “good fight” to fight.

Our battle is not against flesh and blood.

Because that is not the good fight.

Eph 6:10-12

That is where our real battle is being waged.

The weapons of our warfare are not political. They are not legal. They are not social.

They are spiritual.

Eph 6:13-17
