Great is the mystery of godliness

1Ti 3:14-16

Our passage today is the high point of the letter.

Timothy needed to hear from Paul right away. The church was really sick.

Why does their behavior matter so much?

Each saint needed to know how to conduct himself in God’s household, the church.

The Holy Spirit dwells in the church.

To be strong and steadfast in guarding and proclaiming the truth – the gospel.

2Ti 1:14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.

A mystery is a fact that was hidden from all until God decided to reveal it.

Godliness usually refers to teaching or behavior that is approved by God and reflects His character.

Rom 16:25-26

The mystery is the gospel: God’s plan of salvation through His Son.

The mystery is revealed in this profound hymn.

Every line reveals something astounding about Christ.

Joh 1:14

God from all eternity, now in a human body.

He became as a worm, crushed for our iniquities, left to die on a cruel Roman cross.

Phi 2:5-8

2Co 5:21
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

The Spirit vindicated Christ. He testified of His deity and His righteousness.

Rom 1:1-4

God the Father vindicated His Son by raising Him from the dead.

1Pe 1:10-12

Eph 3:4-6

1Ti 4:10

Luk 24:51

Phi 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

Our Lord was manifested in the flesh not only to be a ransom for our souls,

but to be a precedent for our lives. [Joseph Hall (1574 –1656)]

2Co 5:14-15
