The Word became flesh

Who is Jesus?

Joh 1:9-18

Verses 10-18 form the second stanza of this glorious hymn to the Word.

Verses 1-9 are provocative. They spawn a series of questions.

What does it mean that the darkness did not grasp the Light (verse 5)?

What happened when the Light came into the world (verse 9)?

How did the Light, the Word, come into the world?

How did the world react to the arrival of its Creator (verse 3)?

What is the nature of the life in verse 4? Who receives this life? How?

What was John’s testimony about the Light (verse 7)?

The Light enlightens every man (verse 9). About what?

When He came into the world, what did the Word reveal about God?

Joh 1:10-11

The darkness represents the world: the human race in rebellion against God.

The world did not recognize its own Creator when He came!

Here “His own” were the Jewish people.

All but a small number rejected Him, finally demanding His execution.

Joh 19:14-15

Joh 1:12-13

Those who believe in His name receive this life – eternal life.

How? By becoming children of God.

God’s children must be born of God.
A new birth.
A spiritual birth.

Joh 1:14

The Word, who always was God, became human.

He was BORN into the human race - minus the sinful part.

From that point on, He was both God and man.

Rom 1:3-4

Joh 1:14

The “us” and the “we” refer to the twelve disciples.

When the Word became flesh, the glory of God shined forth from a man!

The signs He performed revealed His glory.

Joh 11:40

“only-begotten” means one and only - one of a kind. Unique in origin.

As God from eternity past.
As man by the virgin birth.

This unique Person, God in the flesh, revealed God’s glory to the fullest.

The surpassing grace of God.
The whole revealed truth.

What was John’s testimony?

Joh 1:15

Joh 1:16-18

Verse 17 names this Person who is God in the flesh:
He is Jesus Christ.

Everything that is said about the Word is also true about Jesus Christ.

He has made His Father fully and completely known.

Who is Jesus?

He has always existed.
He always is with God.
He is God.

He is the creator of all things.
He is the source of life.

The Word is also the Light of men.
He came into the world.

The world did not recognize Him.
His own people did not receive Him.

To those who believe in His name, He gives the right to become children of God.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

He is the unique Son of God, full of grace and truth.

Jesus Christ is the Word.

He is the embodiment of the glory of God.
