That which is born of the Spirit is spirit

Joh 2:23-3:10

Jesus performed signs to help people believe in Him. But not as a miracle worker.

As the Christ, the Son of God.

Nicodemus was a Pharisee, and he was a ruler of the Jews.

Nicodemus was also the teacher of the Jews (verse 10).

They believed Jesus was a great teacher. They believed that God was with Him.

But they don’t believe that He is the Son of God,

or the Jewish Messiah, or the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Jesus knew that Nicodemus was blinded by his religion and his pride.

Nicodemus was blindsided by the reply Jesus gave.

The Pharisees were teaching the people that they could enter the kingdom if they kept the Law.

Mat 5:20

A man must be born anew, from above.

Joh 3:5

He replaces “born again, from above” with “born of water and Spirit”.

But what is this new birth?

And why was Jesus surprised that a teacher of Israel would be ignorant of it (verse 10)?

This is the kingdom that Christ, the Messiah will rule when he returns to earth.

Jesus is surprised that a teacher of Israel would not understand this new birth by water and Spirit ….

…. Because it’s found in the Old Testament!

Eze 36:24-28

This will occur at the time of the Second Coming of the LORD Jesus Christ as the Jewish Messiah.

Joh 3:6-7

Flesh here does not refer to indwelling sin.

It simply refers to natural humanity. Being born into a human family.

To be born of the Spirit means to be born into the family of God! God is spirit.

Joh 1:12-13

Joh 3:8

The wind shares characteristics with those who are born of the Spirit:

• Freedom
• Being heard
• Mystery as to origin and destination

Joh 8:14

The Spirit, like the breath of the wind, will cause men to be born again.
