There came a woman from Samaria

Joh 4:1-14

The Samaritan woman could not have been more different from Nicodemus.

Who is Jesus?

Joh 4:1-6

Jesus had a divine appointment to keep with this particular woman.

Josh 24:32

The Samaritans worshipped on Mount Gerizim.

Deu 27:11-13

The Samaritan Bible was a corrupt version of the first five books of the Old Testament.

Joh 4:7-9

First, He was speaking to an unaccompanied woman.

Second, He was asking a Samaritan for a drink.

The Israelites who were in the land intermarried with the gentiles,

and worshipped their pagan gods alongside Yahweh.

Joh 4:10-14

In chapter 3, Nicodemus thought that Jesus was talking about physical birth.

He did not understand what spiritual birth was.

In chapter 4, the Samaritan woman thinks Jesus is talking about physical water.

She didn’t understand what spiritual water was.

The woman saw that the water from Jacob’s well was a gift from God.

But she did not know the far greater gift of God: eternal life.

She had no inkling of who He really was:

the Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of the world.

First, He needs to raise her sights from physical matters to spiritual matters.

Second, He needs to make her aware of her deepest need: her spiritual need.

Joh 4:10

Her mind is on the water in Jacob’s well.

1. The gift that God is offering her. It’s vastly greater than the water in Jacob’s well.

2. Who it is who says to you ‘Give me a drink’. He is infinitely greater than you think.

With Nicodemus, Jesus basically hit him over the head with the facts.

He gently opened her eyes to the truth, one step at a time.

“Living water” could mean moving water, in a stream perhaps, or a river.

Joh 4:11-12

But now she begins to wonder if there might be more to this man.
