He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood

Joh 6:49-59

The Catholic church teaches that when the priest consecrates the host and the cup,

the bread and the wine become the actual body and blood of Christ.

That is not what this passage is talking about.

Jesus mentions heaven 9 times from verse 31 through verse 58.

Joh 3:11-13

I have been sent to you from My Father in heaven.

I am God, like My Father, yet I am also flesh and blood, like you.

I have been sent to give up my life so that you can live.
Really live.

It’s maddening.

Joh 5:37-38

Maybe, once you are beside yourself, you’ll finally be able to see Me clearly!

Stop your deadly fixation on things which are below.

Joh 8:23-24

Joh 6:51-52

1Co 2:14

So what Jesus said was not only baffling, but also deeply offensive, to them.

1Co 1:23-24

They take everything in the most worldly way possible.

They willfully deny that He is using a figure of speech.

They’d have to confront the REAL MEANING behind the figure of speech!

The scandal of the cross.

And Jesus will keep using earthly figures of speech to teach heavenly truths.

Joh 10:2-6

What He says next is highly offensive & scandalous to them.

John 6:53-56

They could not even eat meat if any blood remained in it!
(Lev 17:10-15)

Heb 2:14-15

When Jesus talks about His flesh and blood, He means His complete humanity.

Joh 6:57

He will give HIMSELF - His entire humanity – for the life of the world.

Joh 6:54

Verse 54 closely parallels verse 40.

Joh 6:40

“Eats My flesh and drinks My blood” is a figurative way of saying…

“beholds the Son and believes in Him”!

Joh 6:55

Jesus satisfies our deepest hunger and quenches our innermost thirst.

Psa 63:1-5

Joh 6:56

He who beholds the Son and believes in Him abides in Christ, and Christ in him.

Joh 17:20-23
