The Davidic covenant is a set of promises that the Lord made to King David.

David’s house and kingdom will endure, and David’s throne will be established forever.

1. The covenant is anticipated.

2. The covenant is established.

3. The covenant is confirmed
– and expanded.

4. The covenant is fulfilled: part one – the Messiah arrives but is rejected.

5. The covenant is fulfilled: part two – the Messiah returns to reign forever.

The final two stages appear in the New Testament.

Zechariah 9:9-10

In verse 9, the King is humble, and He is mounted on a donkey.

He rides into Jerusalem on a lowly donkey rather than on a powerful horse.

And yet in the very next verse we see this King ruling the entire world.

The New Testament reveals that this King will come twice.

The first time, He will be born of a virgin, die on a cross, and be raised from the dead.

The second time, He will come on the clouds of heaven, riding a white horse

with heavenly armies to defeat the nations and receive His kingdom.

1. The New Testament records the historical fact: the Messiah came

and His name is Jesus of Nazareth. This was a partial fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant.

2. The New Testament contains prophecies concerning the second coming of the Messiah.

At that future event, the Messiah will completely fulfill the Davidic Covenant.

Matthew 21:1-9

Jesus fulfilled Zech 9:9 when He rode a donkey to Jerusalem a few days before His death on the cross.

Yet in verse 9, the crowd recognizes Jesus as the Son of David.

Luke 1:26-33

The identity of the Messiah is revealed: this child named Jesus is the Messiah.

The Lord God will give this baby Jesus the throne of His father David.

This is an exact restatement of the Davidic Covenant.

Jesus of Nazareth, born of a virgin, the Son of the Most High, is the descendant that the Lord promised David.

The Davidic Covenant is partially fulfilled by the birth of Jesus.

Her Son would die for the sins of the world, and would be raised from the dead,

and then be seated at the Right Hand of His heavenly Father.

But He will return, and then He will fulfill all of the promises God made to David.

Acts 2:22-36

The gospels also contain many great prophecies of Christ’s second coming.
