Spiritual Gifts Part 30: The Deity of the Holy Spirit.

The Doctrine of Spiritual Gifts

The Personhood and Deity of the Holy Spirit

One attack is that He is not even a person. But the other is that He is not God.

Tonight we will examine in detail the deity of the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit.

Act 28:25-27 proves His deity since the passage quoted in Isaiah is attributed to Adonai.

1: Trinity passages reveal the coequality, coeternity, and co-infinity of God the Holy Spirit with God the Son and God the Father.

2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

2: The deity of the Holy Spirit is proven by the words used to describe Him.

a. The Hebrew word Adonai is used of the Holy Spirit;
Isa 6:8-9, Act 28:25-27; Heb 10:15-17, Jer 31:33

b. In Eph 4:30 He is called theos which is the Greek word for God.

c. In 2Co 3:17 the Holy Spirit is called kurios which connotes deity.

3: The deity is the Holy Spirit is proven by the mention of His divine attributes.

Sovereignty:
1Co 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

Eternal Life:
Heb 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Veracity:
1Jo 5:6 This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Omniscience, 1Co 2:10-11.

Omnipotence, Rom 15:13. The Holy Spirit supplies the divine power for believers to execute the PPOG.

Omnipresence, Psa 139:7-8.

He is also omnipresent because He is said to indwell every believer, 1Co 6:19.

The Holy Spirit gives life:
John 6:63 " It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.

He inspires the Scriptures,
2Pe 1:20-21.

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;

The Holy Spirit also regenerates believers, Joh 3:5-6.

4: The Christian is said to be indwelt by the Spirit, that is, by God, in 1Co 3:16, 6:19; Eph 2:22.

1Co 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

5: Believers are placed into the Body of Christ by the Holy Spirit, that is by God, 1Co 12:6-18
