Spiritual Gifts Part 32: Were it not for grace...

The Doctrine of Spiritual Gifts

Point 2. The Giver of the Gifts: The Person and Work of God the Holy Spirit.

The Deity of the Holy Spirit

1: Trinity passages reveal the coequality, coeternity, and co-infinity of God the Holy Spirit with God the Son and God the Father.

2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

2: The deity of the Holy Spirit is proven by the words used to describe Him: Adonai, theos, kurios.

3: The deity is the Holy Spirit is proven by the mention of His divine attributes.

Sovereignty, 1Co 12:11
Omniscience, 1Co 2:10-11.
Omnipotence, Rom 15:13.
Omnipresence,
Psa 139:7-8.
Eternal Life, Heb 9:14.
Veracity, 1Jo 5:6.

4: The Christian is said to be indwelt by the Spirit, that is, by God, in 1Co 3:16, 6:19; Eph 2:22.

5: Believers are placed into the Body of Christ by the Holy Spirit, that is by God, 1Co 12:6-18

6: The Holy Spirit is called God.

The Holy Spirit is explicitly called God in Act 5:3-4.

7: The progression of revelation from the OT to the NT provides further proof of the deity of the Holy Spirit.

The New Testament writers identify their “Holy Spirit” as being identical to the “Spirit of God” in the Old Testament.

He gave Israel its ritual service, Heb 9:8.

The Holy Spirit spoke in and through David and Isaiah and the prophets

Mark 12:36 “David himself said in the Holy Spirit, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet.”

On Pentecost, Peter says the filling of the Spirit was promised by Joel, Act 2:16

The Holy Spirit appears in every book of the New Testament save Philemon and 2 & 3 John.

The Holy Spirit of the New Testament is the same Spirit of God in the Old Testament.

“He is either God, possessing, in distinction of Person, an ineffable unity of the Divine nature with the Father and the Son....

...or He is the creature of God, infinitely removed from Him in essence and dignity. Nothing intermediate between the Creator and created can be admissible.

The Doctrine of Efficacious Grace

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is one of the six permanent ministries of God the Holy Spirit at salvation.

efficacious grace, regeneration,
the baptism of the Spirit, the sealing with the Spirit, and the distribution of spiritual gifts.

The Doctrine of Efficacious Grace

Efficacious grace is the first permanent ministry of God the Holy Spirit to the believer at the moment of salvation.

How does an unbeliever become a believer?

Col 1:13
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

Efficacious grace is that work of the Holy Spirit that takes the faith of a spiritually dead person and makes it effective for salvation.

Forever running
but losing this race

Were it not for grace

Grace is free, limitless, unmerited blessing to helpless, undeserving sinners from the loving God...

...from the loving God whose righteousness and justice are completely satisfied by the Person and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
