Above the brightness of the sun is the Son
2Co 3:16 — 2 Corinthians 4:6
We established last week that the Lord is the One who can remove the veil from someone’s eyes. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2Co 3:17).
We have a special type of liberty in Christ that did not exist for men and women under the old covenant (2Co 3:16-17).
James refers to a certain law of liberty: Jam 1:22-25 Jam 2:8-12
That liberty is not meant to serve our flesh. Instead, we should use it to serve God.
Gal 5:13-18, 1Pe 2:11-16
We are being transformed daily into Christlikeness: Rom 8:28-30 Phi 3:12-16 1Jo 3:1-3
The ministry that Paul and the others had (2 Corinthians 4:1-2), which pointed people to the glorious gospel of Christ, was up against some bad actors.
Paul, then, has to once again defend and distinguish the work that he and others are doing. It’s aboveboard, at a time when others sought to pervert that same gospel.
Paul (2Co 4:3) writes that if the gospel be hid, it is hid to those who are lost (KJV) or perishing (NASB).
What do we make of those who are the moment are perishing (2 Corinthians 4:3-4)? They need the same Lord Jesus Christ who can remove the veil we talked about last week, be they Jew or Gentile.
The Lord’s arm is never too short to save or redeem: Isa 50:1-3 Isa 59:1-2 Act 10:35-43
The gospel we believe is foolish to the world: 1Co 1:18-24
Satan has a great deal of influence in his fallen world, and he has blinded many.
Paul calls him the prince of the power of the air: Eph 2:1-7
Satan also masquerades as an angel of light and deceives many that way: 2Co 11:10-15
We were all lost before as unbelievers, hopeless without the gospel of Christ.
Our job now is to be vigilant: 2Co 2:10-11 1Pe 5:8-10
How does one go from perishing, with a blinded mind, to seeing the light of the glorious gospel of Christ? The One has to show in a person’s heart — they must believe that same gospel.
If you don’t believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, you are perishing: Joh 8:21-26
If you’re seeing Christ, you’re seeing the Light of the gospel: Joh 3:19-21 Eph 5:8 Col 1:13-14
Act 26:13-23 Open their eyes, turn them from darkness Turn them from the power of Satan unto God Forgiveness-inheritance-sanctification by Jesus Christ
Peter, an apostle to the Jews, juxtaposes darkness (blindness) and light too: 1Pe 2:4-12
There will be no sun in Heaven, but will be a Son: Rev 21:21-25
Paul promoted not himself, but Jesus instead, and we should do the same (2 Corinthians 4:5). Bad actors will not, and they cannot.
The same God that commanded the light to shine out of darkness (2Co 4:6) provided the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ to the apostles.
We have liberty in Christ, and those who are perishing can have that same liberty in Jesus Christ. Belief in Him is the key to going from perishing to life anew.
We all have unbelievers in our families + broader networks. Pray continually for them, and know that the Lord Jesus can change them like he changed us. They can be transformed, too.
That transformation comes once they have believed the true gospel of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. Who opened your blind eyes? No one is so lost that the Lord cannot reach them.
