Title: Comfort for the brokenhearted

2Co 7:2-7

 

If you leave remembering nothing else, know that: 1) The Lord will provide for those who are brokenhearted and 2) you are never alone in this life since the sovereign God is with us.

 

It was especially important that Paul emphasize — again — the pure nature of his work to readers 2Co 7:2-3).

Act 20:26-33

 

Paul saw how the Lord was working in the lives of his readers and was bold in speech to them (2Co 7:4). Paul also said he and the others were comforted and exceedingly joyful even amid persecution.

 

Again, Paul and the others lived difficult lives. In Macedonia, they had no rest (2Co 7:5). Conflicts and fears were prevalent.

 

Notice that they found a way to be joyful even in their trials, and know that we should be doing the same.

 

We can and should find joy in the midst of our trials:

Joh 16:16-22; Rom 5:1-5; Jam 1:2-8

 

Look back at 2Co 7:6-7. See how God comforted the apostles via Titus? The Lord will provide us comfort in the midst of our trials.

David understood God was the Rescuer and Deliverer for Egypt: Psa 144:9-15

 

The Lord will provide us comfort in the midst of our trials.

 

Even Jesus Christ received comfort when he was distraught just before His crucifixion: Luk 22:39-46

 

Have you ever been brokenhearted, or depressed before? Our sovereign Lord comforts the brokenhearted. He did so then, and He will do so now.

 

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted:

Psa 51:10-17; Psa 34:15-22

 

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted:

Psa 22:1-5, Psa 22:22-26

 

 

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted:

Psa 13:1-5

 

 

Titus and his news comforted Paul. We should expect comfort to come during our trials too, and we can joy as well. If you’re down, know that the Lord can and will strengthen you.

 

 

We’ll talk about a special and severe letter next week that Paul refers to further into this passage. It’s a significant one, especially given his ties to Titus.
