2Co 7:11-16
Title: Results of Godly sorrow + repentance
Remember that Paul wrote a severe letter — one that produced a positive response from his readers.
Remember that Godly sorrow in very different than the sorrow of the world. The sorrow of the world produces death.
Paul recognized several positive aspects that had come from the Godly sorrow that his readers had as a result of his letter (2Co 7:11).
Earnestness — diligence and eagerness. Readers found them motivated to be more serious in acknowledging their sin. Psa 139:19-24
Vindication of [themselves] — cleared of blame or guilt. Psa 32:1-5; 1Jo 2:1-2
Indignation — righteous anger, in context. Mat 12:33-37, 21:12-15
Fear — every believer acknowledges of God’s power and might. 2Co 7:1-2; Luk 12:1-5
God was the lifelong subject of awe for Jacob: Gen 31:33-42
Longing — could be translated yearning. The repentant believer desires to restore their relationship with God. Psa 42:1-5; 51:1-9
Zeal — this refers to a desire to make things right, driven by love in this case. Joh 2:13-17
Avenging of wrong — this is in response to their own wrong. The repentant believer wants sin judged rightly. 2Co 2:5-7
Repentance brought about several other factors in the lives of Paul’s readers that we should also recognize in our own. Zeal, longing, fear, indignation, etc.
Thank God for Godly sorrow, and for that leads to life repentance, instead of the world’s kind.
The eighth chapter of 2 Corinthians details the support of the saints, financial and otherwise. We’ll address that in part next week.
