2Co 9:6-15 Title: The gift that keeps on giving
Grace is unmerited or unearned favor. God has graced the undeserving world infinitely via His Son: Joh 1:14-17; Gal 5:1-4
Another way that God shows us grace is by meeting our physical needs. Notice that the abundance Paul’s readers had was to be used for every good deed (2Co 9:8-9).
The same who has richly provided for our needs has done so that we might abound to good works. There are good works prepared for us to do. Eph 2:6-10
What are these works in context (2Co 9:6-9)? Giving the poor and needy.
Here’s the reference that Paul used in our passage: Psa 112:1-10
Jesus Christ gave specific directions to the disciples about their approach giving to the poor: Mat 6:1-4
Part of the Lord’s guidance to Israel included their consideration of poor, who would always be among them: Deu 15:7-11
God supplies seed to the sower and bread for food (2Co 9:10) and he’ll multiply the seed you freely give. He’ll increase, the Bible says, the harvest of your righteousness.
Hosea pled with his listeners to sow righteously that they might reap in kindness: Hos 10:11-12
David understood with the Lord as his guide, he would have what he needed: Psa 23:1-6
Paul understood that all we have comes from God. 1Co 4:6-14, 1Co 15:3-11
You as a cheerful giver will be enriched for everything for all liberality (2 Corinthians 9:11) meaning God will provide for you such that you can help provide for others.
Not only is what the people at Corinth providing for the needs of other saints, but the abundance also produces thanksgiving to God (2Co 9:12).
This gift (2Co 9:13) will also put to rest any doubts that Jewish believers would have had given myriad problems in the church at the time.
Your giving will produce thanksgiving for you and hopefully for the people who receive your gifts (2Co 9:13-15). That’s one of many reasons to be a cheerful giver.
God supplies us richly that we might help others: Mat 25:31-40, Jam 2:15-17, 1Jo 3:14-18
Consider the poor. If you have abundance, use what you can for good works. The same God who has prepared good works for us also can take what you contribute and multiply it temporally, eternally, or both.
God has showed an indescribable amount of grace by providing the way that He has, and when we give to the poor, those actions produces thanksgiving to God in the recipients, and in us.
Grace + truth came through Jesus Christ, and our giving is one way that others can see and glorify the same God we serve. Being generous ties back to the same God who has been so gracious (undeservingly so) to us.
