Spiritual Gifts Part 112:  Preventing soul shipwreck when the storms of life hit.

The Doctrine of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

C.  The Baptism of the Spirit is the ministry of God the Holy Spirit in placing every new believer into permanent union with the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Body the Church.

And God our Father has a plan to break our attachment to the old “us” so the new life can pour, and be life for others and blessing for us.

Rom 6:6 this knowing, that our old man was crucified with [Him], that the body of the sin may be made useless, for our no longer serving the sin; [YLT]

Now it is a matter of our counting on this fact for our daily walk, where sight and emotion and flesh and the world all tell us otherwise.

Brokenness means we place no confidence in ourselves, and therefore place all our faith and trust in the Lord.

It is a moment by moment faith and trust in the Spirit to apply the power of the cross to our old self-life and to teach us how to walk as new creatures in Christ.

PHI 3:3  for we [supergrace-believers] and only we keep on being the true circumcision [in the Church Age], who keep on worshipping in the Spirit of God and glory [or boast] in Christ Jesus and we put no confidence in the flesh.

You will have your very own Romans 7 experiences of absolute frustration and in fact despair about your inability to live this life by yourself, according to your own resources.

talaiporos   means “enduring toils and troubles, afflicted, wretched”.  It was used of a person who is exhausted after a battle.

We finally turn and rely instead on our position in Christ and the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

James 4:6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, "GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE."

The more broken we are, the more God can do with us. (Pastor McLaughlin)

That is what He did with the whole human race. He declared us broken at birth, condemned, so we were eligible for salvation and redemption and the limitless grace of God.

1 Tim 1:5 But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

A conscience containing doctrine is the basis for meeting the demands that life places on us, for handling all the problems of life including unfair treatment and misunderstandings.

The quality of our conscience is directly related to our capacity for life, and that is what Peter is bringing out in 1 Peter.

suneidesis is joined by the adjective agathos both here in verse 16 and again in verse 21.  “good conscience” in the English.

?a)gaqo/$ ?agathos Of a good constitution or nature. Peaceful, joyful, happy, in relation to having been reconciled to God (Thayer’s definition for 1 Pet 3:21)

describes that which, being "good" in its character or constitution, is beneficial in its effect; [Vine]

The pairing of the noun suneidesis with the adjective agathos  refers to the “good of intrinsic value conscience” which results from spiritual growth, notably spiritual self-esteem.
