The desire is as deadly as the deed.

Evil desire is as deadly as the deed.

Rom 7:7-12

The Law cannot justify us, and the Law cannot sanctify us either.

In Romans 7:7-12, Paul goes to bat for the Law.

IS THE LAW SIN?

Of course not!
Don’t be ridiculous!

Rom 7:7-12 is where Paul vindicates the Law.

The issue of chapter 7 is not our guilt for our sins, not the penalty , not our need for forgiveness, ….

but rather sin in the flesh, the power of sin , and our need for deliverance from that.

Here Paul begins to reveal the spiritual character and reach of the Law.

ἐπιθνμία

epithumia
a desire, a longing, especially for what is forbidden

Here in Romans 7 the term means “desire after anything forbidden”.

Luk 22:15

Mar 4:18-19
Rom 6:12
Eph 2:1-3
1Jo 2:15-17

In the NT, epithumia is used much more often to refer to evil desires than to good ones.

Exo 20:17
Deu 5:21

Worship no other gods,
You shall not make an idol, Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, Keep the Sabbath holy,

Honor your father and mother,
You shall not murder,
you shall not commit adultery,

you shall not steal,
you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor…”

It is the distinction between an outward action and something that occurs inside.
