Thanksgiving is found in the midst of distress.

Distress humbles us, and humility leads us to gratitude.

1Th 5:16-18

During the first winter in the New World, 45 out of the 102 Mayflower colonists died.

President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving to be a national holiday in the dark days of the Civil War.

September 19 and 20, 1863 were the bloodiest two days in American military history - the battle of Chickamauga .

The Union losses were 1,657 dead, 9,756 wounded, and 4,757 missing for a total of 16,170 casualties out of 58,000 troops.

The Confederate losses were 2,312 dead, 14,674 wounded, and 1,468 missing for a total of 18,545 out of 66,000 troops.

Thanksgiving comes in the midst of distress.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God.

to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.

Thanksgiving comes in the midst of distress.

There are times when we need the Lord to rescue our soul before we are even able to give thanks to Him again.

Psa 142:7
Bring my soul out of prison,
So that I may give thanks to Your name;

In everything may we end up giving thanks, for this is the will of God for us in Christ Jesus.
