In that day

JOH 14:18-20

Jesus was speaking of His death and resurrection.

He is talking about life. Life is a major theme in the gospel of John.

In one sense, Jesus has always lived and always will live.
He IS life!

JOH 1:1-4

He is talking about a particular kind of life, one His disciples will share in the future.

JOH 3:16

In the gospel of John, Jesus talks about eternal life more than any other kind of life.

In chapter 17, Jesus will define eternal life:

JOH 17:1-3

He defines eternal life as knowing the Father, and knowing Jesus, in an intimate way.

JOH 14:18-19

When Jesus came out of the grave, Jesus had a new life: resurrection life.

When Jesus says “because I live” in verse 19, He means resurrection life.

JOH 11:25-26

Every believer in Christ receives a new kind of life at the moment of salvation.

TIT 3:5

The agent of this new life is the Holy Spirit.

ROM 8:23

We receive the first fruits of the Spirit when He regenerates us and indwells us.

We wait with great expectation for the redemption of our body.

At the Rapture we will receive a resurrection body like the one Jesus has, PHI 3:20-21.

JOH 14:18-20

“you will live also” is “the day” that Jesus is speaking about in verse 20.

JOH 7:37-39

The day (John 14:20) of which Jesus was speaking begins when Jesus is glorified.

Then, the disciples will receive the Holy Spirit.

JOH 14:20

“That day” began when Holy Spirit indwelt the disciples on Pentecost.

It will end with the Rapture of the church.

Verse 20, therefore, applies to every Church age believer.

1. I am in My Father.
2. You are in Me.
3. I am in you.

“ I am in My Father.” This refers to
the deity of Christ.

That word “know” in the Greek here means to know based on personal experience.

They had heard Jesus teach them that He and the Father are one.

But they were not able understand it until the Spirit came to dwell in their hearts.

To see this new understanding of His deity, we turn to the church age epistles.

COL 1:15-17

You in Me” refers to the results of the baptism by the Spirit.

Each believer in Christ has been placed into and permanently identified with Christ.

GAL 3:27-28

I in you” is another unique gift to church age believers.
Christ is in us!

COL 1:26-27
