The Gospel of John is very largely a story of individual contacts with the Lord Jesus.
So here we first have several references to Israel and things from the Old Testament.
The word “greater” carves out the fact that Jesus Christ is the completion and perfection of all things and that the church age is unique.
These “greater things” often refer to the work of the Holy Spirit in the church age, the spiritual life made possible by the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
