Post-modernism

Post- Modern: Objective truth is OUT; experiences are IN.

COL 2:2-3

Here is a list of 12 characteristics of postmodern people.

How compatible is postmodernism with Biblical Christianity?

  1. They are reacting to modernity and all its tenets - especially the use of reason to determine the truth.
  2. They reject objective, universal truth. Everyone’s ideas are equally valid.
  3. They’re skeptical and suspicious of authority.
  4. They are like missing persons in search of a self and an identity.
  5.  They have blurred morality and are into whatever is expedient.
  6. They want to live and let live. Tolerance is the ultimate virtue. The ultimate sin is to impose one’s views on things, especially right and wrong, on another community or culture.
  7. They believe that truth claims are fictional, and instead they tell stories.
  8. They are searching for the transcendent experience.
  9. They are living in a media world unlike any other in history.
  10. They are on a quest for community.
  11. They live in a very material world.
  12. They believe that words have no objective meaning in themselves.

So meaning is derived by the reader’s life experience and his engagement with a text.

[adapted from Graham Johnston, “Preaching to a Postmodern World”,
p. 26.]

Post- Modern: Objective truth is OUT; experiences are IN.

Post-modernism denies absolute truth and replaces it with the experiences of the individual or the group.

2TI 2:14-17

Post-modernism & the church

Only one in five Americans claim to believe in absolute truth.

85% of people in evangelistic churches say that the Bible is the infallible word of God.

However, 53% of evangelicals also say that there is no such thing as absolute truth!

Taboo subjects : sin, righteousness, judgment, wrath, hell, the cross, and redemption.
