Class Outline:
Wherever truth flourishes, error will rear its ugly head.
So here, on the one hand, the Spirit is prophesying about the future “last days”.
The present apostasy is a foretaste of the fuller apostasy in the last days.
“Some” includes both erring members of the congregation and the false teachers.
The apostasy has its origins in demonic influence, and lies inspired by demons.
The demons have human allies. They do the bidding of the demons.
Acts 20:29-31
Hypocrisy: they were not who they claimed to be.
They knew they were lying, but they didn’t care.
The conscience is an organ of decision.
Legalism. Putting believers in bondage to man-made rules and regulations.
How do you enforce this? By teaching that some foods are unclean in God’s eyes.
Here Paul goes back to the book of Genesis to make his case.
God created foods because God is gracious.
You can always tell a legalist because he is a killjoy.
God created all kinds of delicious, nutritious foods for us to enjoy and to share.
Believers who know this are grateful for God’s good gifts.
GEN 9:3
“Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you;
I give all to you, as I gave the green plant.”
GEN 1:31
God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.
We restrict ourselves by remaining ignorant of what He has said in His word.
