“I am the Light of the world.”

JOH 8:12-20

Once again, Jesus chose a metaphor that is universal.

Water. Bread. Light.

“I AM these things.”

Living water.
Living bread.
The Light that is the life of the world.

He came to bring real life to the world. Eternal life.

HE IS the real bread: the bread of eternal life.

HE has the living water that springs up to eternal life.

JOH 1:4

This story of the Light begins in the Old Testament, in the book of Genesis.

He is once again identifying Himself as the Lord God, Yahweh, the creator.

GEN 1:1-5

God is Light.
Jesus is Light.

PSA 27:1

They did not have John 1:4, but they did have Psalm 36.

PSA 119:105

Yahweh.
Salvation.
Life.
The word of the Lord.

Jesus is Lord.
Jesus is the Savior. Jesus is the Life.
Jesus is the Word.

In the prophet Isaiah, the LORD God calls His Servant a light.

ISA 49:6-7

This light - this Suffering Servant - brings salvation to the ends of the earth.

JOH 1:29

Jesus as the Light shines brightly across the gospel of John.

JOH 1:5

This verse introduces the incompatibility of Light and darkness.

JOH 3:18-21

All men begin life in the darkness. Dead in sin, without Christ.

They are afraid of having their sinfulness exposed.

JOH 8:12

Believers do not walk in darkness. They have the Light of life - eternal life.

JOH 12:35-36

Darkness cannot prevail against the Light.
