Joh 13-17 is a supreme work of art.
Today, we will take in a wide sweep of this work of art.
If you tried to make sense of this in isolation, it would be quite difficult.
You might come to the wrong conclusion.
The first part of verse 21 is familiar to us.
But it adds some new things to what Jesus said earlier on this subject.
Love here is an ongoing, deepening, intimate relationship.
This is a new kind of love: the same love with which Jesus has loved His disciples.
He tells His disciples what it means to love Him.
He who loves Jesus will be loved by His Father.
Jesus will love him and will disclose Himself to him.
Jesus expands from His commandments to His word, a more all-encompassing thing.
Both He and His Father will come to this person and make their abode with him.
Jesus introduces the topic of abiding: remaining, making one’s home there.
This is an ongoing, life-enhancing relationship.
Now, He describes the depths of that love.
When we love like this, He calls us His friends.
He completes His masterpiece with chapter 17.
Two of those great themes in chapters 13-17 are LOVE and UNITY.
