The Doctrine of Spiritual Gifts
Point 2. The Giver of the Gifts: The Person and Work of God the Holy Spirit.
B. The second ministry of the Holy Spirit at salvation is called regeneration or being born again. It is taught in JOH 3:3-8; TIT 3:5; 1PE 1:23.
This is the record of an actual conversation.
anthropos - a representative member of the human race.
Nicodemus was the representative of religious man, man striving on his own to please God by his so called deeds of righteousness.
John chose to emphasize the Greek identity, so he represents the Gentile world.
So we have everyman, religious man, Gentile and Jew. Whosoever.
The true miracle takes place when someone believes in Jesus Christ for salvation!
Every human being needs to be born again.
His problem is his physical birth, his position and condition in Adam.
Man needs a new position and therefore a new birth.

to procreate (properly, of the father, but by extension of the mother); figuratively, to regenerate:
Here in JOH 3:3, in the passive voice, it means “to be born”.
The adverb is anothen which can either mean “from above” or “again, anew”.
Here in context it refers to a second or repeated birth.
The adverb anothen refers to the repetition of an act, and it also includes in that act a reference to the beginning, and so includes the idea of going back to the starting point.
Regeneration consists of the impartation of the life of God, eternal life, spiritual life to a sinner who is spiritually dead.
The Hebrew word for “life” in GEN 2:7 is in the plural. It points to the impartation of physical life (soul life) and spiritual life.
The human race had the spiritual life from God, but lost it in the fall.
The Hebrew in GEN 2:17 literally says “dying you shall die”.
Dying spiritually (immediately upon disobeying the Lord God), you shall die physically (at some future date).
Born spiritually dead but physically alive, we need to be born again, born a second time. We need to made alive spiritually.
