John was a big deal, pointing to a much bigger deal.
Several OT passages point to John’s coming, and his role relative to Christ.
Think of a fullback — John’s role was to create a path as a forerunner for Christ. In football, fullbacks do so for a more-heralded running back
Jesus spoke very highly of John.
That reference to Elijah signifies John’s role as a particularly prominent prophet. It’s about as strong of an endorsement as you can get, and all of Jesus’ listeners would have recognized that.
As highly as Jesus spoke of John, John never hesitated to point people to Christ. We don’t have his skills or gifts, but can — and should — do the same.
Notice that a group referred to Jesus as they one that John bore witness to (John 3:26) and that John made it clear that he not Christ, but instead one that would come before him (John 3:28).
John was deferential to Christ at all times same as we should be. All we have comes from Him.
