We established who the coming ruler of Israel last week. It’s Jesus Christ, who 1) was born in Bethlehem and 2) comes from eternity past.
That same Ruler will give His people up until the time where she who is in labor has borne a child (Micah 5:3).
That Ruler giving His people up refers to a long period of persecution for the people of Israel. Other OT prophets mentioned this, too.
You may hear this referred to as the “time of Jacob’s trouble” or the “times of the Gentiles” - we’ll read both
She who is in labor = Israel. Remember the mention of childbirth earlier? Let’s look at the previous chapter.
“Labor” in context is referring to a time of pain for the people of Israel. Before a woman brings forth a child physically, she often has a great deal of pain.
Israel saw vast destruction in AD 70 with the destruction of the temple and other happenings, but that wasn’t a full fulfillment of MIC 5:3-4.
MIC 5:3 also says that at some point in the future the remainder of His brethren will return to the sons of Israel. That’ll after the childbirth.
This same Jesus Christ who is the coming Ruler of Israel will be their Shepherd as well. Let’s re-read Micah 5:4
We are fully dependent on Christ for our salvation in the same way that sheep are dependent on their shepherd.
The people of Israel will continue to encounter trouble, but they have a Shepherd that will guide them in a time to come.
Let’s thank God not only that we know Him, but also the peace that we enjoy in Him even now.
