Micah 5:10-15

Vengeance belongs to the Lord

Jesus’ previous roles in Micah: Ruler, Shepherd, Peacemaker, Deliverer

We’ve talked a great the last couple weeks about what the Lord will do to enemies of believing Israel in a time to come.

Jesus’ previous roles in Micah: Ruler, Shepherd, Peacemaker, Deliverer

There’s a tone change here from verse 15 through the end of the chapter — God turns his attention back to Israel

Chariots + horses represent resources that the people of Israel depended on in the past instead of their God.

Psalm 20

(emphasis on Psalm 20:7)

Psalm 33:12-22

Psalm 44

(emphasis on v. 6-8)

The Lord also promised to rid the land of idols, fortune-tellers, sorcerers and the like.

Psalm 135:4-6; 15-21

Isaiah 37:15-20

Micah 5:13 — remember Aaron? Israel for a long while wrestled with the worship of carved images. God will end that once and for all in the future.

Jeremiah 2:7-13

Jeremiah 13:1-11

Asherim (KJV has groves in Micah 5:14, ESV has Asherah) are wood/stone idols.

1 Kings 14:21-24

2 Kings 17:9-13

Ezekiel 20:32-44

Finally, the Lord promises in Micah 5:15 to execute vengeance on the heathen nations.

In God’s providence, he can use a nation to judge Israel then justly judge that nation.

Isaiah 10:10-15 (Assyria)

Jeremiah 50:10-20

(Babylon; also called Chaldea)

We may not be familiar with people bowing down to wood and stones, but many people nonetheless have idols whether they know it or not.

Our trust as Christians is not in man-made inventions but instead in Christ. There’s no idol worship in the body of Christ now — or in the future state of Israel.
