Reminders from Chapter 1:
Paul = afflicted but saw gain
God delivered them from death
Promises are Yes + Amen in Christ
It’s not clear what trip Paul was talking about when he says he did not want to come to the people of Corinth in heaviness (2CO 2:1).
What we do know is Paul did not want to make his readers sorrowful (2CO 2:1-3) because of their relationship with him.
Leadership in ministry and in our service the body of Christ more generally necessitates empathy.
Paul wrote out of much affliction and anguish of heart (2 Corinthians 2:4) but not to sadden his audience. He wrote to them so that they would know his love for them.
Someone offended Paul, evidently (2CO 2:5) but he did not name the culprit. Whatever punished the group laid on him was enough.
Paul’s direction is that readers forgive anyone who had wronged him and confirm their love toward those wrongdoers (2CO 2:7-9).
Forgiveness is key to making sure that Satan cannot sow discord especially between believers (2CO 2:8-11).
Forgiveness comes more easily once we consider the countless times we have been forgiven.
Keep in mind how God will treat our sins. The punishment for them is upon Christ, remember, for all believers.
It’s a guarantee that people will wrong you in this life — pray for patience with them. We have been forgiven a great deal and should do the same with others.
Our love for the brethren is going to drive how he respond to an offense. Remember, as Paul did, that God sees all (“the presence of Christ,” 2CO 2:10).
Chapter 3 of 2 Corinthians will detail the role Paul knew he and others played as ministers of the new covenant, and it’ll speak of a certain veil that is still prominent today.
