To enable us to SEE who Jesus IS…
And then to embolden us to TESTIFY about who Jesus is.
The Spirit acted sovereignly that day.
The Holy Spirit is SOVEREIGN.
He is perfectly able to act all by Himself - without our permission!!
In John 16, Jesus did not condition this work of the Spirit on anything. He states these things as actions that the Spirit will perform.
After salvation, we find many statements in the New Testament epistles that are simply statements of fact about things the Holy Spirit is doing for us.
These statements are not conditioned; there is no qualifier saying if you do this, the Spirit will do this.
ROM 5:5, ROM 8:2, ROM 8:16, ROM 8:26-27, 2CO 3:15-18, EPH 2:17-22.
John’s baptism with water was a baptism for the Jews to identify them with their coming Messiah.
Baptism in or by the Spirit identifies the church age believer with the glorified, risen Lord in heaven, placing the new believer in union with Christ as the Head and the Church as His body.
The Holy Spirit is the one who is tasked with preparing the bride for Christ.
John’s ministry is entirely to the nation of Israel, and therefore earthly in character.
We receive the indwelling Holy Spirit as our Comforter and Helper and teacher and guide.
We see a changing of the guard from a ministry explaining the Lord that was local (Palestine, the Temple), limited (the Jews), and earthly….
To a new age where none of these limitations exist because it is spiritual and universal.
